AVS (Address Verification System)

The AVS Response Code tells you if the billing address matches the actual billing address of the cardholder. The AVS Code will be printed on the merchant's invoices and it will be displayed in the Transaction Center.

When a transaction is submitted, you will receive one of the following responses from the issuing bank:

Visa

  • Y: Address and 5-digit ZIP code both match
  • A: Address matches, ZIP does not
  • S: AVS not supported by card issuer
  • R: Card issuer's AVS authorization system is unavailable; try again
  • U: Unable to perform address verification because either address information is unavailable or card issuer does not support AVS
  • Z: 5- or 9-digit ZIP code matches; Address does not match
  • N: No match on either street address or ZIP
  • G: Address not verified (International)
  • E: Transaction is ineligible for address verification
  • B: Address matches, ZIP could not be verified
  • P: ZIP matches, address could not be verified
  • C: Address and ZIP could not be verified due to incompatible formats (International)
  • D: Address and ZIP both match (International)
  • I: Address could not be verified (International)
  • M: Address and ZIP both match (International)
  • F: Address and ZIP both match (UK Only)

MasterCard

  • Y: Address and 5-digit ZIP code both match
  • A: Address matches, ZIP does not
  • S: AVS not supported by card issuer
  • R: Retry; system is unable to verify address
  • U: No data returned from card issuer
  • Z: 5-digit ZIP code matches, address does not match
  • N: No match on either street address or ZIP
  • W: 9-digit ZIP code matches, address does not match
  • X: Both address and ZIP code match.
  • F: Address and ZIP both match (UK Only)

Discover

  • Y: Address matches, ZIP does not
  • A: Address and ZIP code both match
  • U: Unable to verify address
  • Z: ZIP code matches, address does not
  • N: No match on either street address or ZIP
  • W: Cardholder not found in Address/ZIP file or Address/ZIP not available
  • X: Address and ZIP code both match
  • T: 9-digit ZIP matches, address does not match

American Express

  • Y: Address and ZIP code both match
  • A: Address matches, ZIP code does not
  • S: AVS not supported at this time
  • R: Card issuer's AVS authorization system is unavailable; try again
  • U: Information unavailable (International, will not be returned for Canadian cardholders)
  • Z: ZIP code matches, address does not
  • N: No match on either street address or ZIP
